On the afternoon of November 25th, the launch ceremony of the new book “Discovering Wenzhou” written by Italian scholar Tang Yun was held in the Cultural Auditorium of Zhangli Village, Qidu. Representatives from WZBC were invited to participate and 5 new books were presented as gifts.

Through the perspective of a foreign scholar, “Discovering Wenzhou” digs deep into the connection between Wenzhou and East Asian culture, reshaping Wenzhou’s urban cultural system in international cultural exchanges. This is another new book edited in Italian by Tang Yun, who spent several years visiting various places in Wenzhou, searching for famous experts from all walks of life, recording many memorable historical events.

Tang Yun has settled in Wenzhou since 2017 and was employed by the School of Media and Art Design of our school to offer courses related to radio program production. While in WZBC, she published an article introducing “Wenzhou and the Maritime Silk Road” on the central media, and wanted to write a book “Discovering Wenzhou” for Italian readers.

In the preface of the new book “Discovering Wenzhou”, Tang Yun expressed her gratitude to Wenzhou Business College for providing her great creation environment, and mentioned in the “education part” of the book that WZBC continues to expand  channels to help students realize their dreams of studying in famous overseas universities, and cares for graduates employment, etc.

Tang Yun, born in Turin, Italy, originally named Bonino Gabriella, has published a Chinese-Italian bilingual book “The Chinese Diary of a Contemporary Female Marco Polo” and an Italian book “Discovering The Silk Road: From Camel Caravan to High-Speed Rail”, “Discovering Ri’an’s Intangible Cultural Heritage” and other books. She has been praised by the media as “Contemporary Female Marco Polo”.

Tang Yun introduced that after settling in Wenzhou in early 2017, she began to study the city from the perspective of the Maritime Silk Road, and discovered beautiful ancient export goods such as Ou kiln, lacquerware, silk, and oil-paper umbrellas, and published articles in relevant international websites in Italian. At the beginning of 2020, she ended her tenure as a teacher in WZBC and went to live in Rui’an to search for intangible cultural heritage. In the book, Tang Yun introduced the old alleys in the urban area of Wenzhou and the ancient villages in the counties and urban areas, Wenzhou food, beautiful scenery, folk songs and Ou opera, etc., and translated the folk songs “Pairing Birds” and “Ding Ding Dong” into Italian.

At the launch ceremony, famous experts from Ou kiln, Ou cuisine, martial arts, photography, painting and other fields gathered together. They believed that “Discovering Wenzhou” is not only a carrier of Wenzhou cultural output, but also a medium for promoting Wenzhou culture. The book is almost the Italian version of “Wenzhou Culture Encyclopedia”. Tang Yun said that there is a huge difference between understanding China in a foreign country and living in China. She wants more Italians who have never been to China to have a more comprehensive and objective understanding of China.
